Leaving home stayed and drive to Shanty Town. This is a town constructed in the 1970s with 30 re-created historical building. It will provide a feel of the 19th century Gold-mining town. On arrival, we were too early and the attraction was not opened yet. This is only planned to be an add-on and thus we decide to continue our journey without entering it. If you are interested, this will be the link thatt you can check out on your tour plan.
As we drove along, the scenery was beautiful, but there are not many places that we can stop to take picture. This normally happen when we copme close to farm side or sometimes just by the entrance to the small pathway of the farm. The only thing we can do is drive slowly and so sorry that not too many pictures of the scenery can be shared.

Then we finally arrive at this little township of Fox Glecier. This seems to be smaller and less developed as compare to Frez Josef Glacier. The walk towards the mountain foot that we can see ice and snow is very long distance, may be due to the warmer weather which shortened the length of accumulated snow.
We heard about the Cardona Bra Fence just before we start our trip to New Zealand. So we did plan to pay a visit if time is allowed, and today, it came to our surprice that I noticed the marker I put on the Maps.Me apps showing that we are driving pass by. So as time is allowed now, we decide to have a phot-stop here. As this fence is at Cardona, so the local call it the Bradona.

I heard this site was started by a lady who came over here for a visit and decide to take picture on the beautiful scenary. She like the scene so much and without people around, she decided to take a topless picture. Her bra was then left over on the fence. It was then followed by other ladies and this slowly accumulated over time. This was started sometimes in 1998 or 1999.

Regardless of what we heard, there are two school of thought, there are people who welcome this as attraction, but there are others that view it as an eyesore and embarassment.
On arriving to Queenstown, thanks to the bookmark on Maps.Me which I marked on, we found Ms. Pauline's "Nice Quite Tidy House" easily. As the name implies, it is nice, quite and tidy. Pauline was not at home when we arrived, and we follow her instruction and get into our room just like going back to our own home .... piece of cake! And below are the view of our home for the next three days.
The article below is shared by him and I think it is worth to share here for my friends who like traveling in this blog. I think he is quite right to include the Ubudia Mosques of Kuala Kangsar, Perak, Malaysia in his list 😊

Just a note to my friends, if you happen to visit any of them and do have a picture of any, and do not mind to share them in my blog, please do sent it to me with your approval for me to share. Thank you.

Are you a holy person? If you are, you most likely be interested in knowing about the most beautiful mosques in the world. Here they are:

Al Haram Mosque-Mecca, Saudi Arabia
It's the most famous worship mosque in the world. According to the Qur'an, it's the first house built for humanity to worship Allah. It's the world's largest mosque and surrounds Kaaba, the holiest places for the Muslims. The current structure covers an area of 99 acres and includes both indoor and outdoor praying spaces. During the period of Hajj, it can accommodate up to 4 million people.

Faisal mosque Islamabad-Pakistan
It's the fourth largest mosque in the world and the biggest in the south-east and southern Asia. From 1986 to 1994, it was the biggest mosque in the world before the completion of the Hassan II in Morocco. For many years, the worship center has been voted as one of the most beautiful places in the world.

Sheikh lotfallah-iran
It was constructed between 1602 and 1619 during the reign of Shah Abbas I. In addition to being a worship center, it has other roles. It also functions as a hospital, royal mint, royal caravanserai, and bath.

Taj ul mosque-Bhopal, India
Located in Bhopal, India, Taj ul mosque is also known as the crown of mosques. Featuring a pink façade, the worship center has two 18-storey minarets with marble domes. It also has a bulbous dome, marble flooring, and grand hallway. There is also a double-storeyed gateway that has four recessed archways. While its primary role is to serve as a mosque, it also doubles as an Islamic school during the day.

Wazir Khan-Lahore, Pakistan
It's located in the northern city of Lahore in Pakistan on one of the busiest roads in the area. The mosque has been standing since the 17th century and is one of the most important landmarks in the city. What makes the worship center attractive is the colors and paintings. Both inside and outside the mosque are fresco paintings and tiles. The paintings feature a wide range of colors such as green, cerulean blue, yellow, purple, orange, and cobalt.

Blue mosque-Istanbul
It's one of the landmarks in Istanbul. It boasts of six needle-like minarets and a series of domes and half domes. It was constructed during the reign of the Ottoman ruler Ahmed I between 1609 and 1616. In addition to the exciting domes, the mosque also has high ceilings featuring 20,000 blue Iznik tiles. The tiles have trees and flowers of differing patterns.

Ubudiah-kuala Kangsar, Malaysia
It prides itself of four minarets and a golden dome that was designed by a British architect, Arthur Benison Huback. Huback created the worship center at the command of Sultan Idris Mushidul Azam Shah who had vowed to construct a beautiful mosque as a thanksgiving after recovering from an illness.

Conclusion
These are some of the most beautiful mosques in the world. In the event you are visiting a city with one of the above-mentioned mosques, don't hesitate to visit it and take in the spectacular beauty.

This is another early starting day not only because we use to wake up early but also because we are going for the Bluebridge Ferry from North Island to South Island. I did check the time table in advance and decide to take the trip that departing Wellington at 08:00 hours. According to the requirement, we have to go to the ferry terminal 1 hour in advance for boarding.

Initially, we passed by a lot of grape plantation. Later, we came across quite a number of farms with long pipeline of "dragon". Initially we did not know what was that until we ask our host when we stay in the farm house. We were told that this long pipeline of "dragon" is the irrigator. It always be installed on the diary farm. This is for proper irrigation of the farm fields to provide good food for the milk cow so that high volume good quality milk can be obtained.
This was the most difficult distance that we traveled in this trip. Bringing a few bottles of drinking water when driving is our practice and two of us had drunken more than two liters of water each without toilet break for more than 3 hours. Hence we were so glad and happy when this little cafe was found 11 KM before we arrived to Murchinson.

As I normally believe, resting is for a longer distance to progress. So we have to continue our journey after the cafe and toiler stop. Finally we arrived at Greymouth around 6 pm. The selection of home stay tonight is a caravan in the bush, around 5 KM away from Greymouth city center hosted by Paul and Jannie. This is a choice I made after discussion with my partner. We want to try to feel the stay and overnight in caravan. This is definitely a larger version as compare to the 2-men caravan with larger bed.

The caravan we stayed in the Zephyr model produced in Dunedin in 1973. The host will drive it for their tour annually and it had just be renovated a year ago. When they do not go for tour, this caravan will be parked beside their serene home and it make us very convenient because the host allow us to get into their home and used their kitchen and bathroom.

It was a comfortable stay, except the bed is short compare to both of us. Thus we are glad that we make the rich choice of renting a normal car rather than using caravan for our trip.

The day seems to get dark later in the South Island as compare to North Island. We decide to drive to Greymouth city center for a quick look around and took our dinner.

He told us lots of history of Greymouth including the near by stream where people went for gold mining. Today, he likes to go to the stream but no more gold is found but cobblestone.

We used to wake up early and this practice continue even when we are on tour. Thus it was an early start, leaving our first house, we drove to the Rotorua town center near the Rotorua lake.

It was a quite morning. The town is consider small, especially the streets where all the travel book recommended restaurant site. We it is still very early (before 08:00 hours), many shops were not opened yet and parking is easy and free. We had a peaceful walk along the Tutanekai Street towards the lakefront park, enjoying the cooling morning breeze.
Water front is another view that catch our feeling too with it serenity. There are swans that are black in color here. I remember someone told me previously that the swans over the Northern Hemisphere are majority white color whereas those in the Southern Hemisphere sometimes are a mixture of Black and white. I think this is right and it was so lucky that we meet some Southern Hemispheres here on the first visit. Look at the few pictures that captured below as a prove that the swans here are Black and White. :))

Our method of traveling around normally include to feel how the local feel. Hence vising of a large supermarket chain in New Zealand is a no miss in the itinerary too, even though we normally do not spend too much time in it. The main purpose to get some drinks and dried food so that we can enjoy during driving. Countdown is one of the such major supermarket chain. They open from 6 am to midnight (working harder as compare to 7-11 in Malaysia, right).
After breakfast, we are going to the rush to Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland. This is where the Lady Knox Geyser located and we have to arrive there before 10:00 am. Thanks to my beloved personal driver, we made it.

There are quite a number of people waiting for the lady to perform. This Lady Knox geyser is named after Lady Constance Knox, the second daughter of Uchter Knox, 15th Governor of New Zealand. It was first discovered by a gang of better-behaved prisoners who were accommodated in the first open prison of New Zealand opened in 1901.

It was a gang of those prisoners who first discover the clearing in which the geyser is situated and that the spring can be made to erupt by adding soap. This was discovered when they first added soap to the hot water to wash their clothes. Later finding shows that it is an abnormal situation in which under a certain condition, there can be some hotter water being encapsulated under colder water in some volcanic pool. Soap, being a surfactant when added will break the barrier between the two layer of water and the hotter water from the lower layer erupt and shoot out off the upper layer of colder water. This shooting of water can reach a height of 20 meters, depending on weather.
Here came the Huka Falls after approximately 40 minutes drive. This Huka Falls are a set of low waterfalls on the Waikato River that drains Lake Taupo. The parking area is located near a reserve area with a bridge across canyon of approximately 15 meters. As this canyon is narrowed from a wide span of approximately 100 meters to 15 meters, thus the flow of water is vary rapid across this canyon and forms a breath taking falls approximately 100 meters at its downstream.

We noticed the HukaJets from the Prawn Park do sail to the lower level of this falls and watching it from below.
After visitng Huka Falls, we drove for 5 hours to Wellington, of course with some stops in between. The selected stop is Licorice Cafe close to Motuapa Bay by the southern section of Lake Taupo, which is introduced in the Lonely Planet Travel Book. Besides the famous ice cream, these are what we have to share. Do not forget the heavy breakfast we had in the Fat dog Cafe and Bar this morning in our late breakfast. Hence I am so excited even with such a small portion.

Second night in New Zealand, we arrived in Wellington as planned. This time we stayed in Ms. Renee's home. A clean house with very comfortable room for us. Renee gave us detail information on how to access the house key, what we can used in the house, including the kitchen and etc in advance after we confirm the booking.

She was having an appointment on our arriving. So we just followed her instruction and get the key and check into our room. Then we went downtown to the Wellington city center for a brief walk around and our dinner. By the time we came back home, Renee had slept, may be preparing for the next busy day. We again left early in the next morning for ferry before she woke up. So we did not meet her at all even though we had been staying in her house. From our home in Taman Desa, Kuala Lumpur, our trip started with the preparation of luggage as shown in the picture. Ready to go, double confirm that nothing is missed out and call a Grab Car. The driver answered with a call very quickly, because he is around this area.

This is an old driver who is new to Grab car. He appeared to be quite nervous and decide to come quickly to our resident area. After meeting up and taking us into his car, he then informed that he need to top up the petrol tank and need our guidance to the nearby petrol station.

After topping up his petrol tank, he further appologised that he has to set his GPS accordingly before starting to move. Looking at his uncertainty in operating his smart phone, I decided to set up my GPS too because I do not want his mistake to cause me any delay in arriving the air port.

The drive to airport was smooth, without any traffic jam. We arrived the airport slightly after 21:15 hours. A good timing for Air Asia flight that is estimated to depart at 22:50. Nevertheless, Air Asia did informed that the flight's departure time had been delayed by 1 hour.

Normally I take quite a lot of pictures and store them in Google Album, If you are interested to look at those picture, this is the link that you can go there. I am sorry that normally I write in Chinese over the album. Only a few pictures will be selected and embedded here. Below are two of them and you can notice that I am a "young" old man who becomes very cute when I go on travel. The beautiful lady on the symmetrically arranged rows of chairs is my lovely travel partner.

The flight from KLIA2 to Gold Coast takes 7.5 hours. We did not plan to stop for touring here as swimming is not our choice this time. Regardless of the stopping time of only 1.5 hours, we were arranged to pass through strict security check before being lead into the waiting room prior to boarding back to the same flight.

After re-boarding to the flight, it is approximately 8 in the morning. With a time difference of 2 hours between Gold Coast and Malaysia, it is now 10 o'clock in the morning local time. After a good night sleep on the previous trip, we are ready to buy and take our breakfast in the connecting trip from Gold Coast to Auckland. Air Asia, being a famous low cost Carrier of Malaysia, is very famous with the sales on board for food and drinks. It is not easy to be stewards and stewardesses on board and they have to keep on walking in the flight busy selling items to passengers. Nevertheless, the smiling faces proofed that either they are good performers, or they may be awarded commission by Air Asia on the sales on board. Either ways are fine provided the services are good.
With 4 hours in advance of Malaysia, we finally arrived Auckland International Airport at 16:50 hours. Passing through a door with the Maori carving, it alert to us that we are now in the land of the Maori people.
Prior to passing through the immigration counter, we noticed this signboard advising on what to declare. What I want to highlight is the Chinese sentences on the sign board. I am sure the percentages of population of Chinese in New Zealand is not as high as Malaysia. They used proper Chinese on their official signboard. What a shame to note that our home country, Malaysian government keep on avoid using Chinese sentences in Malaysia Official Signboard with tons of invalid reasoning.

As per our plan, we have to rent a car in airport. An obvious sign by the exit door of the arrival hall shows us the counter next to the door. What a convenient arrangement.

We selected AVIS rent-a-car and rented a Toyota Corolla for 11 days, with a total cost of NZ$ 730, including standard insurance coverage of two drivers. For My Malaysian friends, it is easy to prepare for renting car and driving overseas. You only need to pay RM150 to Malaysian Road Transport department for endorsement of International Driving License. With this, you can then be eligible to rent a car overseas.

After completion of simple documentation, we were then being guided to go to the AVIS parking field outside the airport and pick up our car KGW447 in parking lot #27. My personal driver was so excited with her new car. Hence the first picture of the car was captured here.

As per our plan, we decided to drive directly to Rotorua without any stop in Auckland on the first night. This took us almost 3 hours. This is mainly because of we plan to stay over night in Auckland on the last night, making the final day to be in Auckland and ready to go to the airport at any time.

Initially the ETA of flight is 15:50 hours local time, but it had been 1 hour delayed. Besides, the day got dark fairly early even at 17:00 hours. Hence it is good to travel in car rather than visiting any places on this first arrival in New Zealand.

One getting into State highway from the branch road from International airport, we noticed traffic sign stating "ONE VEHICLE PER GREEN EACH LANE". This is a special traffic sign and it seems to work well in controlling the flow of traffic into the highway, even though quite a serious jam was faced prior to leaving the international airport. This is part and partial of the "tiny specialty" that we tends to note whenever we go for tour in overseas country.
Never forget that I am working in industrial bakery and this is the picture of the bread stand, leaving behind a few loaves of sandwich loaves on it. At this moment of time, with this quantity on the stand, I doubt what is the return rate for the bakery here. :)
Finally, at 20:30 hours, we arrived and manage to find the homestay hosted by Mr. Vlad at 1/20 Carnot Street, Rotorua, Bay of Plenty, 3010, New Zealand. Even though the day was dark, but I manage to drive directly to the front of the house with the help of bookmark I made in advance on the Maps.Me offline GPS. This is one of my selected mobile apps for my travel, to the extent that I decide to write a post to introduce it to all of you as my friends.

This is a great house in the quite residential area. The room prepared for us was clean and warm, with a sticker on the door informing me that this is my room. It is a real good place to rest after a long journey from Kuala Lumpur, to Gold Cost, Auckland and till Auckland.

Mr. Vland is a kind man, origin from Russia. Regardless of the late arrival, he spent time to brief to us all the necessary, including good recommendation for where to visit on the next day. This is the first time I try to use Airbnb for my home stay booking and it give us a good feel with friendly host, clean room with freedom to use the kitchen and pantry as needed.
With reference to travel books, there is Mitai Maori Village that we can pay for joining the Maori Culture show starting 17:00 and 19:00 (2 shows per day). On trying the website link, however I did not manage to access. May be it had been closed. Another site that providing visit visitors is the Temaki Maori Village. Te Puia Geothermal Geyser is another site that may worth a visit. Due to late arrival, however, we did not visit them at night. This typoe of activities are always an option to us rather than a must see.
Country: New Zealand
Tour period: May 8, 2017 to May 20, 2017

This is the most recent driving trip I had just completed with my life partner Phong Lin. It was quite a short plan. The flight tickets was bought under Air Asia's promotion package. It was done by Phong Lin's younger brother. This is a standard practice. Whenever her younger brother noticed cheap air ticket offer, he asks Phong Lin to confirm my availability and if my answer is YES then the tickets will be bought. On confirmation on the buying of flight tickets, the destination and tour period will be fixed. This becomes the starting point of the whole planning process and my work started there.

The same happen this time. Without any idea on the tourism in New Zealand, I started to gather necessary information through internet, travel blogs, travel books and magazines. For this New Zealand trip, my main resources included
Lonely Planet New Zealand (Travel Guide)
, Ma Feng Wo (蚂蜂窝) and Qiong You(穷游). Note that I do frequently refer to Chinese travel books and websites because I am a Chinese educated Malaysian Chinese. There are quite a number of other travel books available in the market
too.

After some reading, I finally realised that it is not easy to travel in New Zealand. The road transport distance between cities is very long and International flight from Malaysia only arrive at Auckland, the northern part of North Island whereas majority of the tourism cities are in the Southern part of South Island.

I use to ask my life partner on where are her preferred sites before I fix the itinerary, and it happens that majority of the selected sites are at the Southern part of South Island too. Hence the first consideration is should we take a domestic flight? Should we rent a car and tour around? Or should we travel with caravan?

I am lucky to have my partner be my driver most of the time, and she always appreciate to have me as her personal tourist guide with the help of GPS. So after discussion on the options, we finally decided to leave out domestic flight option because we both like to look at natural scenery rather than spending time in checking in and out and yet only to observe what happen the the steward and stewardess in the flight.

Next, on checking the option of normal transport and or caravan, we finally think that we are both too tall to be comfortable sleeping in little two persons caravan. Hence the last choice is to rent a normal car and travel around.

This follows by deciding on the cities to visit and type of activity to go for. There are a lot of challenging activities in many of the cities in New Zealand. As we had experienced quite a number of different activities prior to this trip, and it normally takes long hours to join the activity, this is not the option to us.

Finally, the following cities listed below become our choose destinations.

Auckland

Rotorua

Lake Taipei

Wellington

Greymouth

Franz Josef and Fox Glacier

Queenstown

Invercargill

Bluff

Milford Sounds

Lake Tekapo

Christ Church

With the list, one can know that we are planning to cover the whole New Zealand in 12 days, except the Northern tip of North Island. Can we do it?

As we had decided on the option to drive around both Island, thus I have to check for required driving distance and timing. This is done by checking through Google Maps. Selecting the starting and destination cities with auto as mode of travel, the itinerary was then finalised to be as below:

2017 May 08/09: Fly from KLIA 2 to Auckland via Gold Coast then drive to Rotorua.

2017 May 11: From Wellington to Picton with Blue Bridge Ferry and drive to Greymouth.

2017 May 12: From Greymouth, via Frenz Josef and Fox Galacier to stay in Queenstown for 3 nights.

2017 May 13: Visit Invercargil and Bluff

2017 May 14: Day tour to Milford Sounds

2017 May 15: Leaving Queeston to Lake Tekapo and over night in Fairy

2017 May 16: Drive to Nelson on the way back to North Island.

2017 May 17: Nelson to Wellington via Blue Bridge Ferry.

2017 May 18: From Wellington to Lake Taopo and over night there.

2017 May 19: Lake Taopo to Auckland.

2017 May 20: Fly Off from Auckland and back to Malaysia.

With this, now is the time to book for our lodging and I decide to try out with Airbnb this time. This is the first time I use Airbnb to book for our stay. In the process, I do read the comment of previous traveler, checking the actual location and double confirm the road travel distance and time for each home booked. If you are a frequent traveler and not having an account with Airbnb yet, I would recommend you to register a free account here for your future logging in and home booking.

After the above plan be completed, I am now temporary ending this post here. New posts will follow after this to provide detail on our trip and I will link them back to the schedule in this post after publishing each of them.

One of the most powerful development is the GPS (Global Positioning System) in various smart phone.

Currently, I installed 3 GPS related APPs in my Android mobile phone. They all have their strength and weakness. Among them, one of the most useful APPs when travel overseas that I think worth sharing is an offline GPS system Maps.Me.

You can click on this Maps.Me link to down load it if your are using Android smartphone too. As this is an Offline GPS system, I do not have to worry about availability of WIFI when going overseas.

Please note that after installing this APPs, which serves as the working platform, the individual maps has to be downloaded separately into your smartphone. This is important as I did face a few friends who had installed the APP and then find out the map is not available after they went overseas. Of course by then they were advised to look for some WIFI and download the map accordingly.

In my normal practice, I use to download the map of the country I plan to visit inside this Maps.Me APP. Then I will check through various resources including various travel books or magazine and then mark the sites that I plan to go inside the map.

In some cases, because of the language used in the open map system which is used by Maps.Me, it may be not easy to search for a site (this is in continuous improvement by the Maps.Me team). Under this condition, I used to search for the site at Google Map and then mark it in Maps.Me.

It is good to have different color of bookmarks available and I used to try marking different category of sites with different color (example: Restaurant, Transport, Attraction and etc). This helps in giving me an idea on what is the bookmark when I am on the trip.

I had been using this Maps.Me App for years and feel satisfy with it in Malaysia, Singapore, New Zealand, China, Japan, France, Natherland and some other countries. Thus decide to recommend it to all travelers like me.
